The Journey of a Hand-Knotted Rug
Preparing the Yarn
Wool rugs start with raw fibers. The Katwari (spinner) layers strands together on a bristled pad, brushing them to remove clumped dirt and knots. She then spins the wool on a charka, creating the yarn.
Creating the Color Story
The wool thread is then dyed by an experienced artisan, timing the yarn’s soak in the dye—time that could be the difference between azure and powder blue. These colors become the foundation of your rug’s design.
Weaving One Knot At a Time
When it’s time to weave, each knot is tied individually, row by row, line by line. This requires months of skilled work where the weaver follows a rug map to guide them in bringing their design to life.
Completing Finishing Details
Once the rug is complete, it is washed and sheared by hand. This is important, meticulous work: One false move and months of work could be lost. Once sheared, the rug is ready to come home to you.
