Made for Living
Whether your taste leans antique-inspired or more contemporary, we’ve got just the guidance to shop rugs that stand up in your most-loved spaces—without sacrificing style points. You’ll want to pay attention to the weave and materials, then consider the specific needs for the space you’re curating. Let’s break it down.
some notes up top
The Weave
No matter which high-traffic area you’re shopping for, you’ll want to stay away from hand-tufted, handwoven, and hand-loomed rugs. These construction types could show wear or threading more readily if in places frequented by pets, kids, or high foot traffic. Same goes for high-low weaves—keep the pile consistent, low, or flat in areas where you anticipate heavy use, avoiding advanced wear on the rug.
The Materials
For ultimate durability and stain resistance, turn to synthetic fabrics like polyester or polypropylene. These materials are the MVPs of durability and—bonus—create a smooth pile and comfortable feel underfoot. You’ll often see that printed power-loomed rugs are made with these materials, a process in which a design is printed onto a power-loomed base, imparting the finest of details and lush colors—qualities these rugs maintain through every footfall, spill, and season.
Pile Heights & Types
Medium & Low Pile Rugs
A medium- or low-pile rug (ranging from 1/4”-1/2”) reduces the likelihood of snags or wear in high-traffic spaces. For extra stain resistance and durability, opt for a synthetic option, in areas where kids and pets rule, or where spills are more likely to happen. A synthetic-fiber rug is smooth underfoot and will provide you with a large variety of style options when shopping. A rug made with natural fibers (like wool and jute), with a tight, consistent weave, works too—you just won’t get the stain-resistant benefits or smooth feel.
Very Low Pile Rugs
A very low-pile rug (anything under 1/4”) is like your floor’s second skin—particularly those made with synthetic fibers. We recommend very low-pile synthetic rugs for the dining room in particular, as they ensure a smooth, snag-less sweep when pulling out your chair (and have those stain-resistant perks).
CloudPile™ Rugs
Our signature CloudPile™ rugs are some of the softest you’ll meet, with a printed, power-loomed pile—which means it’s durable, stain-resistant, and maintains its color vibrancy. We recommend these styles particularly for living rooms and bedrooms where comfort is key. We’d skip the dining room, since a chair won’t pull out as easily.
Washable Rugs
Washable rugs are made with a low, flat pile with the same stain-resistant and durable qualities of any other synthetic rug. The difference is when spills and stains happen—or you just want a deep clean—it can go into the washer, no problem. We recommend these styles particularly for the kitchen, dining room, entryway, or anywhere else you might anticipate there being a spill.
Don’t Forget a Rug Pad
Rug Pads are essential for the health and longevity of your rug, no matter what you’re shopping for. Rug pads prevent slipping and sliding, which is not only good for vacuuming and safety, but prevents premature wear and tear—not to mention, a rug pad ensures that you’re not constantly adjusting your rug. They also help with noise reduction, protect flooring, and add extra cushion underfoot (a particularly helpful perk with thinner rugs).
